Cursor runs local processes and can also connect to a remote server directly, so it supports every Moodle and Ed Discussion Model Context Protocol (MCP) surface described in MCP servers. Official reference: Model Context Protocol (MCP), fetched 2026-09-21.

Prerequisites

  • moodle-cli and edstem-cli installed and signed in. See Install and Install.
  • Cursor installed.
Cursor reads MCP servers from ~/.cursor/mcp.json (every project) or .cursor/mcp.json in a project root (that project only).

Preferred: moodle mcp connect

This writes a bridge entry to ~/.cursor/mcp.json:

Manual: remote, header auth

Get <your-token> with moodle mcp connect cursor --mode remote --show-token.

Verify the connection

Open Cursor’s Customize sidebar panel to see each server’s connection state and toggle it on or off. If a server fails to connect, check MCP Logs in Cursor’s Output panel (Cmd+Shift+U) for the error.
