ChatGPT connects to remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers only — there’s no local stdio option — and the connection goes through OAuth, so this is the same shape of setup as claude.ai. Official reference: Model Context Protocol, fetched 2026-09-21.

Prerequisites

  • A deployed Moodle Worker (moodle mcp deploy) for Moodle, or Ed’s hosted endpoint for Ed Discussion. ChatGPT can’t connect to a self-deployed Ed Worker’s static token — see the Ed Discussion tab below.
  • Developer mode turned on: in ChatGPT, go to Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode.
Open a pairing window first:
This prints your connector URL and a one-time pairing code, valid for ten minutes and one approval. In ChatGPT, open the plugins/connectors panel, select the add control, and enter the connector URL in developer mode. ChatGPT starts an OAuth flow to the Worker; sign in and enter the pairing code when prompted.

Verify the connection

The connector appears in your connectors list once authentication completes. Start a conversation, enable the connector for it, and ask a question that requires a tool call to confirm ChatGPT can reach it.
OpenAI renames and moves these settings between releases. If a menu item on this page does not match what you see, follow the official page linked above; the connector URL and the OAuth flow do not change.
